Ned's Blog

Welcome to Ned's Blog.
I'm Ned and I could qualify as a grumpy old man because I'm the right age, the right gender and I'm grumpy about things that annoy me. I enjoy a little humour and the young'uns tell me that I'm "opinionated" - whatever that means.
I hope you enjoy my writings because I need the money!

Some random thoughts from Ned

Boys will be boys

Imagine, if you will, a warm sunny day off the coast of Korea. A bunch of guys plying the coast in a sub and being very bored!
On the horizon appears a ship – Hey let’s have some fun says one and see if these fish really work. All agree and off goes a torp. Yea – it hits. Boat goes down they keep sailing.
40 something people died, World War 3 is imminent and the North Koreans resort to a Shaggy response “It wasn’t me”

Sorry

Notice how everyone is saying sorry. Seems like an international trend. The latest Sorry by the South African Rugby Union and not to be outdone, instantly followed by the New Zealand Rugby Union. But does it mean anything when “Hobbsy” uses terms like “darkies”.

Oil Spill Blame Game

What an amazing display of finger pointing at the BP Oil Spill Enquiry.
But it doesn’t solve the problem.
Why do we not have an international consumer embargo on BP products. That would have more effect than a bunch of US politicians and their President ranting.

Supermarkets try to “Save the Planet”

I was somewhat bemused the other day when shopping at Wellington Supermarket.
Recall it’s the Supermarkets that want to save the planet through less use of plastic bags.
I purchased just 6 items and received 2 dockets. The first was a receipt which measured 352mm x 79mm.
The second was a petrol discount voucher measuring 258mm x 79mm. That is a total length of 610mm or 24”. Just how many trees do these organisations account for each day?
And just to add insult to injury – the petrol discount – BP. How dare they push me towards the world’s worst environment polluter.

Leader Extraordinaire

I take my hat off to Dr Paul Reynolds CEO of Telecom Group NZ.
Many people – me included – were vocal about the repeat failures of the Telecom XT network.
Most leaders / managers would run a mile, place head in the sand and finger point elsewhere.
Not so with Paul Reynolds. He stood up to be counted and is fronting a great TV campaign accepting the failure and asking for a second chance. Given that breath of fresh air of corporate honesty from a
”live body” I reckon they deserve another go.
Well done Paul – I am even warming to your logo – must be getting old.
